Scores of Sierra Leoneans met in London at an investment and networking conference on the 4th June, as part of efforts to rebuild their country, recovering from a decade of civil war.

The conference, an initiative of Sierra Leoneans living in the UK working with international partners, will bring together non-governmental organisations and representatives from various governments. It will also mobilise key stakeholders and decision makers inside and outside the country from both the private and public sectors.

Thousands of Sierra Leoneans are resident in the UK and with the cessation of hostilities in their country, many of them have expressed interest in investing in their country or returning home. Over 200 delegates have registered for the conference, including participants from the USA, Netherlands and Malaysia.

The conference is being organised with the assistance from the Department for International Development, Sierra Leone’s largest bilateral developmental partner. Lisa Curtis the Private Sector Development Adviser in DFID’s West Africa Department, has highlighted the importance of involving the Sierra Leone Diaspora in the economic reconstruction of their country. “The Government of Sierra Leone sees the private sector as the engine for economic growth. The skills, knowledge, networks and investment interests of Sierra Leoneans living abroad are an essential part of this drive. DFID is delighted to be able to partner with the Government of Sierra Leone in this and other initiatives to help bring about real change and create opportunities for all Sierra Leoneans”
